What the Springs Are Actually Doing

A sectional garage door is heavy, and the motor on the ceiling was never built to lift that weight. What the opener really does is guide a door the springs have already balanced, so that at any point in its travel the door is close to weightless. That is why a broken spring is not a small inconvenience: the opener is suddenly asked to do a job it was never rated for, and the door becomes a genuinely dangerous object.

Torsion Systems

A torsion system uses one or two springs wound around a steel shaft mounted on the wall just above the door opening. As the door comes down, cables wind onto drums at each end of the shaft and twist the springs tighter; as the door goes up, those springs unwind and give the energy back. Torsion is what most doors fitted in the last twenty-five years use, including nearly everything the builders put on Gilbert homes through the big growth years. It handles wide, heavy doors well and keeps the hardware in one controlled place.

Extension Systems

An extension system puts a long spring alongside each upper horizontal track, running parallel to it. Instead of twisting, those springs stretch as the door closes and pull back as it opens. You will find them on older installations and on some narrower single-car doors, particularly where there was never enough headroom above the opening for a torsion shaft. A properly fitted extension system also has a containment cable running through the middle of each spring, which is there to stop a broken spring flying across the garage. If you can see extension springs with no cable threaded through them, that is worth mentioning when you book a visit.

How to Tell Which You Have

Stand well back inside the garage with the door closed. Look at the wall directly above the opening: a horizontal shaft with one or two springs wrapped around it means torsion. Then look along the ceiling either side of the tracks: long springs stretched parallel to them mean extension. That is as much investigation as anyone should do. Do not climb up for a closer look and do not put a hand near either spring.

Why Matching Matters More Than Type

People ask which system is better, but that is rarely the useful question. What matters is whether the spring fitted to your door suits that door: wire diameter, inside diameter, length and wind direction all have to be right for its weight and height, and two coils that look identical from the driveway can be rated completely differently. A spring that is close but not correct will never balance the door properly and will fail early.

Cycle Life, Not Years

Springs are rated in cycles, where one cycle is the door going up once and down once, which is why a warranty expressed in years tells you less than you would hope. In an Arizona household where the garage is how everyone comes and goes, a door can easily run eight or ten cycles a day and get through that rating years sooner than the average suggests. If your door works that hard, ask about higher-cycle springs and what the difference costs.

Why This Is Never a Home Repair

A loaded garage door spring stores a serious amount of energy, and it does not stop being loaded because the door is closed. Releasing or winding one requires the correct winding bars, the door clamped and secured, and the experience to know what the hardware is doing at every stage. Substituting a screwdriver or a piece of rebar is how people lose fingers and worse. There is no version of this job that becomes safe with care and a video, which is why the advice here is simply not to attempt it.

Springs in Gilbert Garages

Most Gilbert homes went up during the 1990s and 2000s with torsion systems on wide double doors, and those springs have now been cycling through more than two decades of hot summers. Heat does not break a spring on its own, but a garage that sits well above 110 degrees for weeks at a time is hard on every lubricated moving part around it, and a dry bearing or a seized roller makes a spring work harder than it should. What You Can Safely Report

From outside the door's path, note whether it is open, closed or stuck partway, whether you heard a bang, and whether the opener was running at the time. If you can see a clear gap in a coil, mention it, and say if a vehicle is shut inside. What you should not do is keep pressing the remote to see whether it will go this time.
